History

The airline was founded on 30th May 1924 and was then known as Huff Daland Dusters. Operation began on 17th June 1929 after the acquisition of the airline by Collett E. Woolman who renamed the airline as Delta Air Service. The present day Delta Air Line is a result of numerous airline mergers, the recent being with Northwest Airline in 2010 which made it the world's largest airline during the time of the merger. The current livery of Delta ‘Upward & Onward’ uses four colors and features a "widget" on each aircraft's vertical stabilizer to refer to Delta's origins as a carrier in the Mississippi Delta.

Fleet

Delta operates a fleet of more than 700 aircraft manufactured by Airbus, Boeing, and McDonnell Douglas as per the data collected in January 2013. The airline operates the largest fleet of Boeing 757, McDonnell Douglas Md-88 and MD-90 aircraft in the world. Delta announced on November 20, 2014, that it had ordered 25 Airbus A350-900s and 25 Airbus A330-900neos to replace the aging Boeing 747 and Boeing 767 fleets. The average age of the feet at Delta is 17 years. Many of the ageing aircrafts are schedule to retire by 2017.
